Blackware, redware, carved, sgrafitto.
|
Traditional carved blackware and redware are the most familiar of Santa Clara pottery, but fine sgraffito work is also a hallmark of this pueblo. This is the home of Margaret Tafoya and Nathan Youngblood and also of Joseph Lonewolf and Grace Medicine Flower. The clay of Santa Clara is difficult to work and many pots are lost in firing, thus great skill is required of the potters. Yet they persist in working with their traditional clay and firing in the traditional manner, making any beautiful pot that survives a true Native American treasure.
