Sheldon Harvey
Winner Best of Show 2008 Santa Fe Indian Market.
Painter, carver, creator of mystical images, Sheldon Harvey is a member of the Red Running Into Water Clan of the Diné (Navajo). Just 31 years old, Sheldon has been an artist all his life, but began seriously considering art his career after completing his education at Diné College. He was encouraged in his youth by his grandfather and uncle; as a young man he has worked with Diné artists Don Whitesinger and Tony Abeyta. Sheldon paints in both acrylics and oils on canvas, creating images that are sometimes representational, sometimes symbolic and always imaginative. His Ye’ii figures, carved in wood and decorated with paints, macaw feathers, horsehair, canvas and yucca are among his most creative works. Many are based on the traditional Diné creation stories, and are his own interpretation of what he has heard and read. He never repeats a carving.

At the 2008 Santa Fe Indian Market Sheldon's sculpture "Twins" won Best of Classification, while his painting "Trixter Way" won Best of Classification and Best of Show, the first time anyone can remember such a multiple win. He had previously won first place prizes in both categories each year he had entered. The Navajo Nation Museum in Window Rock, Arizona hosted a one man show of retrospective and current works by Sheldon Harvey in late 2006 and early 2007.

Sheldon’s pieces reside in collections throughout the United States, and in England, Australia, Switzerland, Holland, Israel and Japan.
