S Fleming Beasley
Traditional Native American style beadwork.
S Fleming Beasley is a self-taught artist who is dedicated to preserving the historic patterns and traditional beading techniques used by various Native American groups. Although he is part-Cherokee, his interest and expertise span many beading styles—Crow, Sioux, Iroquois, Cheyenne, Arapaho—and items ranging from medicine pouches to tobacco bags. All work is hand beaded on smoked, brain-tanned moose or deer hide. Mr. Beasley uses glass beads exclusively, and searches out antique beads for their authentic colors. He has an extensive collection of historic trade beads and often uses one or more to embellish a finished piece, a tradition of long standing among Native Americans. So faithfully produced is his work that some of his early pieces have been found in museums—after being artificially aged by unscrupulous traders. Upon learning of this deception, Mr. Beasley began signing his work to prevent further misrepresentation. A far happier tribute is the many young Native Americans who come to Mr. Beasley for instruction in their native craft, a compliment he treasures and a request he gladly fulfills. Mr. Beasley was cited in “American Cowboy” magazine among the top bead artists in the country. His work is collected by many prominent Western artists including sculptors Doug Hyde and Sandy Scott, and painters Patricia Dobson, Quang Ho, Len Chmiel and Kang Cho, as well as collectors of Native Americana.
