| Although he is Hopi, Alton Komalestewa is the former son-in-law of Helen Shupla of Santa Clara Pueblo, and honed his pottery skills while living there. He is the only potter today making ribbed melon bowls in the style invented by Helen, where the ribs are formed repousee-style from the inside out. Other melon bowls have solid interiors with the ribs formed only on the outside. |
